Pestle to Mortar~ Singing to Bowl ~ Medicine to Singing
Long long ago, before the markings of time as we know it, there was the stone nation. It lived among the many nations of creation: trees and waters, mountains, and lakes, deserts, canyons, clouds, slithering and four-legged and two-legged creatures and some with even more legs. All were One, though many. One Nation of Creation.
One day, among the many, there came a newly created two-legged. They took their place among the nations and found they could participate in all aspects of creation.
Exploring and experimenting within this vast and marvelous landscape, the two-leggeds found that when pressing several plants together at a time, in-between one stone and another (or between one tooth and another!), the mixtures would become something beyond the original plant’s aroma-taste-texture, and even beyond the original expectations of the one mixing them. A new creation!
Stone to stone
The act of crushing plants together could create many things that made for wonderful aromas, oils, and even food. All it took was stone-plant-stone.
Two-leggeds began to notice how they felt better with some of the results. Some even found themselves humming as they ate. Over centuries, many two-leggeds found that stone~plant~stone could be passed around to friends and relatives (collectively speaking).
Centuries later some two-leggeds were able to cut the stone into shapes for this very purpose, and centuries later someone called them mortar and pestle. Some were made of stone, and some made pestles from wood.
Mortar and Pestles: Historians note some are dated back to 1550BC. It is estimated that mortar and pestles were used for 6,000 years before this for food preparation – mostly for the grinding of spices. They are unique in that their design has remained unchanged over the last 10,000 years.
After all these centuries, stone to stone remains the birthing place for the blending of many wonderful things. And so, it was. And so, it is.
Well, some of the time. Because over time the two-leggeds found they liked some things and disliked others. It seemed a change was taking place. Some people say sin entered the world, some say animosities and hatred. Something had happened. Over the century’s differences of smell, skin tone, bone structure, and languages were often judged as better or worse, good, or bad. Tribalism became paramount, clans clamored for their claims, some people made claims for fame. The original wonder of creation, as well as the stone upon stone, One Nation of Creation, become distorted. Time passed.
Time passed, and metals were discovered, and some workers made bowls of metal, and some found that running a stone or stick along the rim of the metal bowl would make an amazing sound or tone. The sound reminded them of the celestial tones their relatives talked about years and years ago.
Pestle to Mortar~ Singing to Bowl ~ Medicine to Singing
MedicineSinging is the blending process of mortar and pestle, singing bowl and stick, the blending of things that brings about wondrous new expressions of creation. MedicineSinging is the mixture of all things wondrous, the creation of a medicine indigenous to this earth. It is the way to press into life and find wondrous new manifestations of sharing, of cultures, of faiths and cosmologies, and our relationships with one another. In loving relationships, it illuminates the path of One, even when our friends are born from another mother.
For Medicine to Sing, for the blending to give new combinations of new creations, and to result in good medicine, one must respect all expressions of original creation: no aspects better than or less than. All to be respected as well as expected to bring the absolute best we have to the living of our lives in one another’s presence and the presence of creation, no matter of what nation of creation you were born within.
All creation leads us to Original Anticipation, and Original Participation, as we press together for understanding and love, and that which is given back to us is the new creation. That is why we also find ourselves partnering with Hope as well. It is never too late to become a new creation.
Remember: Long, long ago, before the markings of time as we know it, there was the stone nation. It lived among the many nations of creation: trees and water, mountains, and lakes, deserts, canyons, clouds, slithering and four-legged and two-legged creatures and some with even more legs! All were One, though many. Singular or paired, blended, or mended, this human-creation-relation is meant to express, blend, heal, to make the heart sing, to be MedicineSinging.
A word about “appropriating” from different people, places, things, cultures…
We are all Indigenous to this planet. Don’t think so? Try living on another planet. We are all of necessity and survival, appropriating creations expression. There have always been wanderers, migrants, refugees, travelers, changing the landscapes of the planet.
Some of us think of ourselves as First Peoples, Second or Third Peoples. You can use this vision to divide and conquer or open your heart (Sacred Bundle) to all peoples and parts of creation, so we can all be One Nation of Creation. Many expressions and manifestations, many relations, and many wonders, yet One.
MedicineSinging stands for the express caring and sharing of the human-creation-relation, to hold all things sacred, to be our creative best as we partner with creation. We have been given this gift of partnership with creation. It can get along without us, but presently it’s all we have. Let’s partner in healing, creative ways of sacred companionship, each one each many, blended within the sacred movement of creations mortar and pestle. May what be revealed heal, whatever revelation reveals let us revel in the rigorous living of life. Mortar to pestle, Singing to Bowl, Death to Resurrection. Medicine to Singing.
Wondrous mixture of all things human –
Medicine’s indigenous to this earth,
Made sacred by creation’s mortar and pestle –
Medicine bowls vibrating within the earth’s girth.
Humans and cultures, lands, and turfs –
Creatures sharing creations consciousness.
The pressing together of life’s mystery and glory
Becomes creations worth.
Pressed together into openings of a new creation
It is never too late to heal the earth and its relations,
Inviting each of us to humbly take our place
Among all nations.
You just have to put pestle to mortar,
Letting the bowl turn to music,
Letting the music turn to medicine,
As our lives become MedicineSinging
